Students need to be 5 years old on or before August 31, 2013 for entry into Kindergarten and 6 years old for entry into First Grade. This increases the likelihood that students will have developed the maturity to successfully meet rigorous state and district academic standards. Occasionally, students with fall birthdays who miss the cut-off date appear to demonstrate advanced social, physical, communication and cognitive skills.
Parents who live in Hoquiam and would like to have their child assessed for early entry should contact Lincoln Elementary at 538-8250. Testing for early entry will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013. The testing fee is $75, with a reduced fee for low-income families.
During the April Board meeting the Hoquiam School Board approved the continuation of the "Team Wednesday" pilot program. Click the above headline to read more and see the results of the parent surveys.
Doreen Wilsdon has been appointed by the Hoquiam School board as the newest Principal for Lincoln Elementary School following a rigorous interview process that included three other highly qualified candidates.
Doreen is currently an elementary school TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment) in the Camas School District located just southeast of Vancouver, Washington. Prior to her appointment as a TOSA, she distinguished herself as a teacher in first and fourth grade in Camas.
"We are so pleased to welcome Doreen to the Hoquiam School District. She brings a wealth of talent and experience to our schools" commented Superintendent Parker.
Lindsey Drake will move from her role as a "Lead Teacher" this year at Emerson to full time Principal in 2013-2014. Ms. Drake worked in the Hoquiam School District as a classroom teacher and Title I teacher for several years prior to becoming a Lead Teacher at Emerson.
She's been enrolled in administrative classes through Seattle Pacific University last year and again this year. Lindsey will complete her course work in the next few months and secure her state Principal's credential prior to the next school year.
Lindsey spent the better part of a day interviewing for the opening with committees comprised of staff members, a parent, a board member, administrators and itinerants.
"Lindsey brings youthful enthusiasm and skills to the position that will allow her to make a difference" says Superintendent Parker.
Both Principals will officially begin on July 1, 2013.
